(KIWA Staff Photo)Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council met in regular session on Wednesday afternoon in the council chambers at the Sheldon Community Services Center.
Marv Van Riesen brought up some concerns about the discussion regarding Fire Chief Brad Hindt’s legal bills. Van Riesen said that things are being withheld from the public. Mayor Greg Geels told Van Riesen that the facts would be released at the appropriate time. Van Riesen also said it’s time to get an ordinance on the books regarding e-scooters before something tragic happens. He also mentioned that in his opinion, it is unacceptable that there is no school liaison officer when the Sheldon Police Department employs nine officers.
By approving their consent agenda, they approved the meeting minutes from the previous meeting, the list of claims, financial reports, the approval of two Sheldon Fire Company applicants, the setting of two special council meetings — one to consider city manager applicants, and one to hold virtual interviews with city manager candidates — the first on Wednesday, September 23rd, and the other on Saturday, September 26th, the approvel of a liquor license renewal for Backyard Brew and beer permits for both Kwik Trip and Family Dollar, the approval of a street closure for the Sheldon Fire Company fundraiser on October 8th (corrected from October 12th), the approval of a Sheldon Community Ambulance Team applicant and the approval of a 2025-26 Road Use Tax report and a related resolution.
In new business, the council approved a purchase agreement for the property at 425 West 7th Street in Sheldon. This was the subject of the recent closed session. They also decided to research the cost and availability of a facilitator for a goal-planning session with the Sheldon Chamber and Development Corporation (SCDC) once the new city manager is in place.
There was also a discussion on Children’s World. There appears to be disagreement as to whether the council should continue to subsidise infant room fees, and on the fairness of how the funds are distributed. Council member Jeff Wagner stated he would like to see Children’s World’s business plan and have a few more facts before making a decision.
A closed session regarding the possible purchase of property was tabled until more city council members could be present.
