Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon Middle School students wrapped up another successful year at the State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa (SSTFI) last week. The fair was held at Hilton Coliseum, which is located on the Iowa State University Campus in Ames. All students had a chance to present their projects to the judges and members of the general public over the course of the two days.
At the Special Awards Ceremony on Thursday evening, Lexi Cannoy was recognized with a Discovery in Science Award, and Darren Vollink and Ike Thiner received the Inform Award. Both awards recognize students for their work in scientific research. On Friday evening at the Grand Awards Ceremony, Lexi Cannoy finished second in the Junior High Physics and Astronomy division. Darren Vollink and Ike Thiner received honorable mention recognition in the Animal Sciences division, and Cooper Craig received honorable mention honors in the Microbiology division.
Sheldon science teacher Jim Gude says that competing in this academic competition helps students to grow academically and socially. He says all three groups did well in communicating their project — which included their research question and hypothesis, the method used to carry out their testing, the results they collected, and an analysis of their data. Mr. Gude says congratulations to these four students and what they were able to accomplish this year with their scientific research.
