Hawarden, Iowa — A Vermillion, SD resident was taken to a hospital after a crash near Hawarden on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that just before 7:20 a.m., 49-year-old Abul Shaifullah of Vermillion, SD, was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu northbound on Highway 12, two miles south of Hawarden. They say 29-year-old Brandon Sjaarda of Hawarden was driving a 2000 Buick LeSabre westbound on 480th Street. Sjaarda proceeded through the stop sign at Highway 12, entered the intersection and the vehicles collided.
Shaifullah was transported by the Hawarden Ambulance to Hawarden Regional Hospital.
Each vehicle sustained approximately $3,000 in damage.
Shaifullah was cited on a charge of operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license and operating a motor vehicle with an expired registration. Sjaarda was cited on a charge of failing to obey a stop sign and/or yield right of way.
