Bernard H. “Bernie” Boone, age 88, of Sheldon, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center in Sheldon. The funeral service will be 11:00am Saturday, April 26, 2014 at the First Reformed Church in Sheldon with Rev. Donald Lenderink ~ officiating.
Burial will be in the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon with Military Graveside Services by the: Sheldon American Legion McGlothlen-Cowie Post #145.
Visitation will be Friday, April 25, 2014 after 2 P.M. with the family present from 5:30 to 7:00 P.M. at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.
Memorials may be left to the Diabetes Association or Parkinson Disease

Bernard H. “Bernie” Boone, son of Andrew Henry and Jeannette (Zuiderweg) Boone was born on January 26, 1926 in Sheldon, Iowa. He attended school in Sheldon and graduated from Sheldon High School in 1944. After high school he joined the United States Army Air force on April 22, 1944 at Camp Dodge in Des Moines, Iowa and was discharged on November 1, 1945 as a PFC from Truax Field in Madison, Wisconsin. After the service he returned to Sheldon and was united in marriage to Clara Bernice Hector in Sheldon, Iowa on September 5, 1947, First Reformed Church. The couple made their home in Sheldon where Bernie started his career as a Mechanic at Ten Clay Tractor Company. He owned and operated Boone’s Auto Repair; and retired from Cenex/Land-O-Lakes as a Diesel Mechanic. After his retirement Bernie drove a chemical truck for Cenex, where he received the 100,000 miles Safe Driver Award; and worked part-time for Arnold Motors Supply of Sheldon. In 2008, Bernie and Clara moved into the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon and in April of 2013 Bernie became a resident of the Sanford Sheldon Senior Care in Sheldon, Iowa. Bernie passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center in Sheldon, Iowa reaching the age of 88 years, 2 months and 27 days.
Bernie was a member of the First Reformed Church in Sheldon; the Sheldon American Legion McGlothlen-Cowie Post #145, Sheldon Morning Kiwanis and for 14 years he was a member of the Sheldon Volunteer Fire Department. The couple enjoyed wintering in Arizona for 14 years, he loved roller skating, riding motorcycles, camping, boating and fishing. Bernie was known as “Mr. Fix-it”.
Left to cherish Bernie’s memory is his wife of 66 years, Clara B. Boone of Sheldon; their children, Jody and his wife, Jennifer Boone of Lincoln, NE; Barb and her husband, Brent Graves of Hartford, SD; Mary Ann Boes of St. Paul, MN and her friend, Greg Schmitt of Zumbrota, MN; seven grandchildren, Amanda (Erik) Granse, Christine Boone, Heather (Tristan) Johnson, Trent and Tasha Graves; Molly and Morgan Boes; a step grandson, Erick Tieva; three great grandchildren, Isabella, Elaina and Adelaide Granse and many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Jeannette Boone, a sister and brother-in-law, Dorthena and Marlin Den Beste and a brother and sister-in-law, Andrew “Bud” and Ardis Boone.
