The Sanborn Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for 54 year-old Bryan Vander Plaats of Sanborn.

Bryan Lee Vander Plaats, the son of Walter and Jessie (Dykstra) Vander Plaats, was born September 16, 1959 at Sheldon, IA. He lived his youth in the Sanborn, IA area, and received his education at the Sanborn Christian Grade School, and later, at Rock Valley, IA.

Bryan spent several years living in Colorado and Texas working in the construction industry, as well as a security guard. He also worked with his father constructing grain elevators. Carpentry was something Bryan always enjoyed, so remodeling homes never seemed like work. Spare time was spent watching NASCAR races or just tinkering in the garage with electrical projects. His favorite job was babysitting Aiden Jensen, Allie Scott and Austin Scott, his two great-nephews and great-niece; taking them for trips to the library or the city park on his scooter. Bryan was a member of the Christian Reformed Church at Sanborn. He passed away at Avera McKennon Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD on February 8, 2014 at the age of 54.

He is survived by his mother, Jessie Vander Plaats of Sanborn; sisters: Joyce Meister of Sheldon, IA, Beverly (Mike) Baumgarn of Sibley, IA, Ruth (Don) Post of Orange City, IA and Sharon Zylstra of Rock Valley, IA; brothers: Paul (Kim) Vander Plaats of Little Rock, IA and Robert Vander Plaats of Sibley, IA; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Bryan was preceded in death by his father, Walter; one brother who was stillborn; and his grandparents: Dick and Jacoba Vander Plaats and Charles and Anna Dykstra.
