Carl Akeson, Jr., age 91 of Archer, IA, passed away at Sanford Sheldon Medical Center on Friday, December 20th, 2013.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 23rd at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Archer. Rev. Cory Flannigan will officiate.
Visitation will be at the church beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Monday with the family present at that time.
Burial will be held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Primghar. The Sanborn Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for 91 year old Carl Akeson, Jr. of Archer.
Carl Akeson, Jr., age 91, passed away on December 20, 2013 at the Sanford Medical Center in Sheldon, Iowa. He was born to Carl and Olga (Haese) Akeson on June 24, 1922, on a farm near Archer, Iowa. He graduated from the Archer High School in 1939 and attended the University of Iowa.
Carl proudly served his country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army’s Fourth Division. He was injured in the Battle of Hurtgen Forest in Germany. Following the war, he returned to farming near Archer. In his early farming years, he also did some custom hay baling, corn shelling and trucking.
In 1951 he married Merna Kuiper, and they farmed until they moved into Archer in 1985. In addition to farming, he also spent many years driving school bus for the Archer School District. Throughout his life, Carl contributed to the community by serving on the boards of the Archer School, the Archer Grain Co., the telephone company and the Rural Electric Cooperative. He joined the Primghar American Legion Post in 1945, where he was the local Commander for fifteen years and also served as a county and district officer. He was a life member of the 40 and 8, as well as the Fourth Infantry Division Association.
He was a loyal member of the Republican Party and never missed a national election. He was a life-long member of the Methodist Church, serving in various capacities. He enjoyed reading, playing cards, and sharing his memories of the war years.
Carl is survived by his wife, Merna; two daughters, Rhonda (Duane Lom) of LaCrosse, WI; Yvonne (Vince Heuer) of Waterloo, IA, and their children, Charles, Ellen, and Ann Heuer; one son, Craig (Deanna) of Archer, and their children Cole and Melissa Akeson; and a sister Lillian Dickens of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Orval Akeson.
