Charlie Samuel Harms was born August 21, 1940 in George, Iowa to Winfred and Gladys (Christensen) Harms. He was raised on the farm, where he learned early the value of hard work, and to love and care for animals. As a young man, he became a skilled trap-shooter, and won the Junior National Championship in 1956.
His early education was in George, Iowa, and higher education was at the University of South Dakota. On January 19, 1962 Charlie was united in marriage to Faye Fisher in Little Rock, Iowa. The couple began their lives and started their family. A lot of fond memories grew out of time spent at Lake Okoboji in the summers.
In 1971 the family moved to Princeton, IL, living there until 1979 when they moved to Waverly, IA and then to Mt. Pleasant, IA. From 1990 until 2000 they lived in Moberly, MO. Charlie worked for Siebring Manufacturing from 1961 to 1971, then Hawkeye Steel from 1971 until 1985. Charlie owned and operated his own Sales/Manufacturing business, Charlie Harms Corporation, until his retirement in 2002. During this time, Charlie’s beloved wife Faye lost her battle with ovarian cancer in 2000 after 38 years of marriage.
Though he maintained strong connection with the Midwest, Charlie retired in 2002 to Tucson, AZ, where he thoroughly enjoyed the sun, his friendships and community. He had an exceptional gift for conversation. He was an avid golfer and experienced the joy of a hole-in-one in 2014. He traveled around the country in his fifth-wheel trailer, and became ill near Plano, TX on his return from one of those trips.
He will be greatly missed. Charlie is survived by son, Bob (Toni) Harms of Palos Heights, Illinois; daughter, Kelly (Brian) Sutton of Waverly, Iowa; son, Mike (Missy) Harms of Glenview, Illinois; 2 grandchildren-Stefanie and Jenni; sister, Pat (Randy dec.) Clark of Sioux Falls, and niece Niki Clark of Sioux Falls.
He was preceded in death by his wife Faye, his aunt Lolly Perrault, his brother-in-law Randy, and his parents, Win and Gladys Harms.
