Cletus RothCletus Roth, age 79, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Monday, March 17, 2014 at Sanford Sheldon Senior Care in Sheldon, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, March 21, 2014 at 1:30 P.M. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon, Iowa. Father Allan Reicks officiating. Burial to follow at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Sheldon. Visitation will be Thursday, March 20, from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 P.M. Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:30 P.M. all at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon.

Cletus Elmer Roth was born on May 31, 1934 in Ashton, Iowa. He was the son of Louis and Margaret (Staudacher) Roth. He lived his youth in Ashton where he attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School and graduated from high school. He served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged.

He was united in marriage to Elizabeth “Betty” Bradley of Louisville, Kentucky on June 6, 1959 in Louisville. They lived in rural Sheldon, Iowa. Betty passed away on December 15, 2000. Clete worked at Big 4-Land O Lakes-AGP, for 27 years. He was later employed by Rosenboom M & T and Tanks Unlimited in Sheldon. Clete also enjoyed bailing hay for others and himself.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon and was a member of The Knights of Columbus. He was involved with the O’Brien County Sportsman Club, Turkey Federation, Sheldon Saddle Club and American Quarter Horse Association. He was a member of A.A. and enjoyed the fellowship there, and 37 years of sobriety.

Clete loved his horses and buggies and being a part of parades, giving rides to people at Village Northwest Unlimited, and taking his grandchildren to get ice cream cones. He enjoyed riding and training horses, trail rides and camping, and he was a rodeo fan. He also spent time hunting and fishing.

Clete will be remembered as a person who liked to tell stories and good jokes, and who had a big heart and was willing to help anyone that needed help.

He passed away on Monday, March 17, 2014 at Sanford Sheldon Senior Care in Sheldon.

Those left to cherish his memories are his 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren: Ann Roth of Sheldon, IA; Mary Roth of Omaha, NE; Brad Roth of Rock Rapids, IA and his children Tom and Katie Van Kley and child Haley, Aaron and Kelly Van Kley and children Casen and Calema, Jesse and April Roth; Mike and Mary Roth of Ocheyedan, IA and son Derrick Petersen and children Karli and Dayna; son-in-law: Terry Kamstra of Sheldon, IA and his children Christine and children Cayden, Kayci, and Luke, Elizabeth and Josh Fettes, and Margaret; siblings: Mary Ann Mehne of Muskegon, MI, Clair (Mary Ellen) Roth of Minot, ND, Mary Grace (Fran) Gohla of Waupaca, WI, Mary Alene Poss of Franklin, MN, Cecil (Lois) Roth of Ashton, IA, Clifford (Donna)Roth of Estherville, IA, Mary Collette (Ed) Kalous of Cedar Rapids, IA, Joe (Mary Ann) Roth of Ashton, IA; sister-in-law: Doris Roth of Minneapolis, MN.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Betty Roth; two daughters: Rose Marie Rothand Kay Kamstra; one brother: Kelly Roth; two brothers-in-law: John Mehne and Jim Poss.
