Elroy Altena

Mr. Elroy Altena, age 78, of Hull, passed away on Monday, November 17, 2014, at Sioux Center Health in Sioux Center.

There will be a funeral service on Thursday, November 20, at 2:00pm, at the Hull Protestant Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. James Laning will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hope Cemetery in Hull.

Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Wednesday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the CHURCH. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Elroy was born on December 1, 1935, at Maurice, the son of Jake and Sadie (De Vries) Altena. He was raised on a farm near Maurice, where he attended a country school through the eighth grade. He also graduated from the Western Christian High School in Hull.

On June 17, 1955, he married Chalice Jonker at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. They lived in Orange City a short time, but most of their married life was spent on a farm northwest of Hull. In addition to being a farmer, he was a contractor, specializing in steel bins and buildings. In 2000, they retired into Hull.

Mr. Altena was a member of the Hull Protestant Reformed Church. He enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include his wife of more than 59 years; four children and their spouses, Deanna and Rob Wynia, of Sioux Center; Donna and Allen Kroeze, of Alton; Dennis and Cindy Altena, of Fairview, South Dakota; and Lorri and Lyle Meendering, of Visalia, California; thirteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and his twin brother, Leroy Altena, of Maurice.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Sentner and Aubrey Altena.

Memorials will be directed to the Trinity Christian High School in Hull and the Northwest Iowa Protestant Reformed School in Doon.
