Elsie Lohman

LOHMAN, Elsie picElsie Lohman, age 94 of Rock Rapids, IA died on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at the Rock Rapids Health Care Centre.

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Friday March 22nd at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, IA, with Rev. Dan Kordahl officiating.  Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids.

Visitation will be Friday, March 22nd one hour prior to the service at the church.  Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids is in charge of services.

Elsie Lohman was born March 11, 1919 near Rock Valley, Iowa, the fifth of six children born to Emil and Marie (Behrman) Lange.  During her childhood she lived on the family farm near Rock Valley and attended country school.

Elsie graduate Valedictorian of her Rock Valley class in 1938 and continued her education at Westmar College in Le Mars, IA, completing normal training.  She taught country school four years before she and Woodrow “Woody” Lohman were married on June 28, 1942.

Woody and Elsie farmed near Rock Rapids, IA. They moved into Rock Rapids while Loren, their only child, was in high school. After retiring from farming in 1963, they enjoyed traveling and spending 26 winters in Sun City West, Arizona.

Her real passion for years was playing cards with friends and duplicate bridge, which she reached the rank of “Silver Life Master”.  She and Woody also enjoyed constructing lighted Christmas tree pictures and framing prints for a hobby.

On March 7, 2003 Elsie’s husband Woodrow Lohman died unexpectedly.  Elsie remained living in her home until June of 2006, when she entered Rock Rapids Health Care Centre and remained there until her death, this past Thursday, March 14, 2013 at the age of 94.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Linda Lohman of St. Louis, MO; two grandchildren, Stacy (David) Rose of Mascoutah, IL and Jason Lupher of Santa Monica, CA; two great-granddaughters, Sarah Rose and Lily Rose of Mascoutah, IL; sisters-in-law, Pearl Grotewold of Rochester, MN, Jo Lange of Rock Valley, IA and Toni Lohman of Colorado Springs, CO; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Marie Lange; her husband, Woodrow Lohman; son, Loren Lohman; two brothers, Emil and Carl Lange; and three sisters, Freida Rehder, Ann Benson and Emma Brinkhous.
