Harlan Hulst

Harlan Hulst, age 67, formerly of Sioux Center and Hull, passed away in Mexico on Saturday, January 5th.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, April 13th from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Family and friends are invited to attend this time of sharing.

Harlan Keith Hulst, age 67, son of John Jr. And Agnes (Roozing) Hulst was born November 9, 1951 in Sioux Center, Iowa. He moved to California with his parents at age 3. He attended Thomas Jefferson Elementary in Bellflower until 6th grade when they moved to Hull, Iowa. He finished his education at Boyden-Hull high School in 1970.

Harlan joined the United States Navy in December of 1970. After completing Basic Training in San Diego, California, where he went on to proudly serve his country as an Aviation Boatswain Mate (Aircraft Handling) First Class on the following ships: USS New Orleans (LPN-11), USS Denver (LPD-9), USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63), and would eventually retire on the USS Midway (CV-41) On Oct 1, Harlan transferred to Fleet Reserve, and spent the years after his retirement until his death with the Merchant Marines. He became ill while serving on the USM Green Bay off the coast of Mexico. He passed away in Mexico on January 5, 2019.

Harlan met his wife Norma Pierre Alberto while stationed in the Philippines. They were married on Jan20, 1978 in Olongopo City in the Philippines. Of this marriage to sons, Michael and Matthew were born.

Harlan loved traveling the world and being at sea. He enjoyed reading, telling jokes, and observing people. Norma’s family appreciated the fact that he totally immersed himself in the Tagalog dialect and family customs and traditions of their area. He won many Kareoke contests, singing in Tagalog. With his love for reading he became a master of trivia. He will always be remembered as the kind and loving husband, father and big brother to his whole family.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Norma (Alberto) Hulst, and sons Michael and Matthew of San Diego, California, his Mother, Agnes Hulst and sister Shannon (Hulst), and her Husband, Dennis Baack of Sheldon, sister in laws, Cely and her husband Jessie Nava of Los Angelos, CA., Maria and her husband, Edwin Baldoria of Bromerton, Washington, Thelma and her husband, Ariel Torrente of Phoenix, Arizona, Angelina Amigo of Olongopo City, Philippines, Evelyn and her husband, Keith Roland of Virginia, Zeny and her husband LaVerne of San Diego, CA., and one brother in law, Freddie Alberto living in South Korea.

Harlan was preceded in death by his Father, John Jr. Hulst, his sister, Sharla (Hulst) Wohlert, his Father and Mother in law, Fely and Pol Alberto, and his brother in laws, Dominador Alberto, and Danilo Amigo.
