Mrs. Hilda Vander Meide, age 95, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.
There will be a memorial service on Friday, March 21, at 11:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Friday, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the funeral home.
Arrangements are being completed by the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Hilda was born on June 13, 1918, at Orange City, the daughter of Nick and Minnie (Huitink) Huisman. She was raised at Orange City.
On November 20, 1942, she married Harvey Jean Van Der Meide at Orange City. They farmed northwest of Orange City, where she was a homemaker. “Harv” passed away on April 29, 1964, at Orange City.
In 1968, Hilda moved into Orange City, where she was employed at the Orange City Municipal Hospital, a coffee shop, and at Northwestern College. In 1998, she moved to the Pioneer Court and in 2011, she transferred to the Pioneer Memorial Home, both in Orange City. On February 4 of this year, she became a resident of Royale Meadows.
She was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she participated in the Mary Martha circle. She also did quilting with other women from the church.
She enjoyed traveling with the Frontier Club, crocheting afghans for her family, playing cards (belonging to several clubs), and going out for coffee, especially to Hardees.
Survivors include two children and their spouses, Ron and Carol Van Der Meide, of Cedar Falls; and Twila and Jeff Achterhof, of Homer Glen, Illinois; five grandchildren, Ryan Van Der Meide, and his wife, Shelley; Kelly, and her husband, Josh Shull; Drew Achterhof, and his wife, Colleen; Blake Achterhof, and his wife, Val; and Kyle Achterhof; eight great-grandchildren, Hayden and Lila Van Der Meide; Hudson and Kimbal Shull; and Riley, Dylan, Lennon, and Graysen Achterhof; and two sisters-in-law, Geraldine Huisman, of Orange City; and Evelyn Huisman, of Holland, Michigan.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Verlyn and Leroy Van Der Meide; three brothers, Henry, Alvin, and infant Lloyd Huisman; and two sisters and their husbands, Marie and John Bergsma; and Dorella and Joe R. Kleinhesselink.
