Jacob Marion “Mike” Weerheim, age 94 of Rock Rapids, IA died on Sunday, May 26, 2013 at his home in Rock Rapids, IA.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2013 at the First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, with Reverend Dan Haggar officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 30th from 3 to 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids.
The Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids is in charge of the arrangements for 94-year old Jacob Marion “Mike” Weerheim.
Jacob M “Mike” Weerheim was born at Harrison, SD May 14, 1919 the son of Phil and Marie (Brand) Weerheim. He received his education at Harrison. He worked for farmers in South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. In 1937 he spent the winter in California. On returning to Iowa he worked for farmers. August 29, 1941 Mike was united in marriage to Frances Brown at the Methodist Church in Butte, NE. They lived in Denver, CO until 1943 when they returned to Iowa and for a short time lived and worked on a farm near Inwood. In the fall Mike was drafted into the Army and served until his discharge in April of 1946 as a Staff Sargeant. He worked as a painter until becoming a mechanic at Newell Motors. The Weerheims were active members of the Church of Christ (Disciples). In 1949 they moved to a farm at Platte, SD returning to Rock Rapids in 1953 when Mike was a mechanic in garages and Ford Tractor shop and Henning Motors. In 1969 he started his own auto repair shop on Highway 75, later moved to South Story St. The Weerheims had a home built east of Rock Rapids where in 1982 Mike moved his shop there where he became semi-retired doing small engine repair and later retiring. In 1995 Mike worked for Al TeSlaa and Sons farming at harvest and spring planting times. He had been a member of Christian Church (Disciples) and more recently First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Weerheim of Rock Rapids; daughter Twyla Garnmeister of Spirit Lake; grandchildren, Michael (Judy) Garnmeister of Rolling Meadows, IL, Michelle (Al) Bartley of Spirit Lake, IA, James (Erin) Garnmeister of Des Moines, IA, Mark (Laura) Weerheim of Rochester, MN, Bryce Weerheim and Steven Weerheim of Stewartville, MN and Dean Weerheim of Rochester, MN; daughter-in-law, Sigrun Weerheim of Stewartville, MN; seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Phil and Marie Weerheim; son, Larry Weerheim; brothers, Ralph, Richard, Art, Phil and Ed; sisters, Johanna Dyk, Josephine Ringling and Catherine VandenBos.
