Jerald Honkomp

Jerald Honkomp, age 71 of Ashton, IA died Wednesday, September 11, 2013 after a short battle with cancer at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, Sept. 16th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton, IA, with Father John Vakulskas and Father Clinton Honkomp as Celebrants.  Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Ashton.

Visitation will be Sunday, Sept. 15th from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton. There also will be a 4:00 p.m Rosary and a 7:00 p.m. Vigil service at the church Sunday evening.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

 Jurrens Funeral Home of Ashton is in charge of services.

Jerald Dennis Honkomp was born December 16, 1941 in Ashton, Iowa, the son of Edward and Grace (Jellesma) Honkomp. He was raised in Ashton and attended St. Mary’s School, graduating in 1960. Jerald was united in marriage to Linda Kruger on November 22, 1965 at St. Mary’s Parish. They lived near Ashton, IA, where they farmed in Osceola County for many years. Jerald also drove truck for Prins of Worthington for 20 years.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton, IA. He loved spending time with family and friends. He dearly loved his grandchildren. He was known for his great sense of humor and quick wit. He enjoyed repairing things and could fix anything.

He leaves behind his wife of 47 years, Linda Honkomp of Ashton, IA; Son, Jeffrey (wife, Heather) Honkomp and their children, Madison (13) and Jacob (11), all of Winterset, IA; Daughter, Kristen (husband, Chip) Acton and their children, Kendyl (15), Keegan (13) all of Gilbert, AZ; Daughter, Karla Honkomp Van Zante of Altoona, IA and her children, Karrigan (11), Sawyer (9), Avery (5); Son, Jay (wife, Angie) Honkomp and their children, Emry (6) and Eli (2) of Treynor, IA; and his mother, Grace Honkomp. He leaves a large family of brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Honkomp; a brother, Dan Honkomp; a sister, Mary Jo Block.
