Joan Dykstra

Joan Shirley Dykstra, age 87, of Sheldon, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at Sanford Sheldon Senior Care.

Her services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 25, 2022, at the Archer Reformed Church in Archer, Iowa with Rev. Kevin Muyskens officiating.

Burial will be in the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon, Iowa.

Visitation with the family present will be on Sunday, April 24, 2022, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Andringa Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Memorials may be directed to St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Joan Shirley Dykstra, the daughter of Bert and Jennie (Geurink) Aberson was born on March 29, 1935, in Orange City, IA. She attended a country school south of Orange City. She married Jacob Dykstra on August 28, 1962, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City, Iowa. They had 3 children, Debra, David, and Douglas, and lived most of their married life in Archer, Iowa. Jake and Joan moved from Archer to the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon in 2016. Joan was a housewife and also worked at Casey’s in Sheldon for 10 Years. Joan passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at Sanford Sheldon Medical Center reaching the age of 87 years and 21 days.

Joan loved nature and the outdoors. She enjoyed having a large garden each summer and growing a lot of beautiful flowers. She liked to watch birds and take care of any cat and new kittens that came to her backyard. She and Jake took their family on many camping and fishing trips. They continued camping at Graham Lake in Minnesota in their later years. She loved to collect Coke memorabilia of any kind. Joan was an artist. She loved to do oil paintings and had a talent for drawing, especially portraits and animals. She was proud to have done all the drawings for the Archer Centennial cookbook.

She was a member of the Archer Reformed Church. She was a youth group leader when her kids were involved and also created many bulletin boards and banners for the church.

Left to cherish her memory are her children and their spouses, Deb and Mart Peters of Sheldon, Iowa; Dave and Jen Dykstra of Boyden, Iowa, and Doug and Krista Dykstra of George, Iowa; six grandchildren, Heather (Justin) Moreau, Brady (Brittany) Peters, Maitland Dykstra, Courtney Dykstra, Eli Dykstra, and Sean Dykstra; eight great-grandchildren, Levi, Landon, Eden, Elle, and Lakum Moreau, Chase, Asher, and Rhett Peters; siblings, Betty Engeltjes, Jeane Van Veldhuizen, her twin sister Shirley Van Veldhuizen, Gilbert (Thelma) Aberson, William (Darlene) Aberson, Esther Van Den Berg and sister-in-law, Gert Aberson; also many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, sister, and brother-in-law, Wilmina and Nick Cleveringa, brother John Aberson, and brothers-in-law, Bernie Engeltjes, Gene Van Veldhuizen, Kenny Van Veldhuizen, and Darrell Van Den Berg.
