Marylis Margene VandenHull

Marylis Margene VandenHull, 88, of Onawa, Iowa, passed away December 22, 2022 at her home surrounded by her family.

A Funeral Service will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 9, 2023, at the Onawa United Methodist Church, Onawa, Iowa, with Pastor David Alan Godwin, officiating. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Marylis’ obituary. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. A luncheon will follow the service at the church. Burial will follow at 3:00 P.M. Monday, January 9, 2023 in the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.

Marylis was born on February 14, 1934, the daughter of Howard and Madeline (Moore) Philby in Sheldon, Iowa.

Marylis and Marvin VandenHull were married November 24, 1954 in Spencer, Iowa. Five children were born to this union, Lyle, Lori, Gary, Shari, and Scott.

Marylis attended St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa, driving with Nancy Fryett, from Onawa. She graduated from the Diploma Program, becoming a Registered Nurse in 1972. Marylis was employed at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa until 1975, when she started employment with Monona County, as a Public Health Nurse. She became a Public Health Nurse Administrator in 1980, retiring in 1994, with eighteen years of service.

In their early years, Marvin and Marylis enjoyed square dancing together and taking camping trips with their five children. After retirement, Marvin and Marylis enjoyed wintering in Alamo Rec-Veh Park in Texas for twenty years, making many lasting friendships. Marvin passed away October 6, 2017.

Some of Marylis’ hobbies through the years included, growing flowers, antique collecting, and many paintings that she shared with everyone. Marylis was a member of the Onawa United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society.

Survivors include her children, Lyle (Denise) VandenHull of Onawa, Iowa, Lori (Gary) Brandt of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, Gary VandenHull of Onawa, Iowa, Shari (Steve) Gantz of Grinnell, Iowa, and Scott (Kim) VandenHull of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; ten grandchildren, Melissa Hill, Michelle (Adam) Nygaard, Diana (Rick) Bauer, Kacie (Ian) VandenHull, Jennifer (Michael) Meyer, Stephanie (Owen) Fuller, David (Michelle) Gantz, Mathew Zanker, Samuel VandenHull, and Johanna VandenHull; nineteen great-grandchildren, Antheiyaleigh, Caiden, Cohen, Ayvalynn, Jayden, Michael, William, Leland, Chris, Larinda, Gabriella, Macy, Omri, Oliver, Jacob, Christopher, Lucas, Timothy, and Natalie; brother, Norman (Sharon) Philby; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Van Zee and Esther VandenHull; and many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin VandenHull; parents, Howard and Madeline (Moore) Philby; grandson, Steven Amos Grantz, Jr.; and three brothers-in-law,  Jacob VandenHull and his wife Viola, John VandenHull, and Richard Van Zee.
