Paul Heiller was born December 21, 1945 in Sibley, Iowa the son of Floyd and Ruby (Fink) Heiller. Growing up, he lived with his family on the family farm near Ocheyedan, Iowa.
While growing up on a farm, Paul enjoyed swimming in the sand pit and fishing where he even won an all-age fishing competition as an 8 year old. He was so proud for catching the most and the biggest fish.
Paul was confirmed at age twelve in the Zion Lutheran Church, MSLC near Ocheyedan.
He graduated from Ocheyedan High School in 1964, where he enjoyed playing football, even after an injury that cost him part of his left ring finger.
Paul was united in marriage to Jackie Snell. To this union daughters, Deb and Deanna were born.
Paul inherited his father’s butcher business in Ocheyedan and ran the business for several years. He was a professional meat cutter for 28 years. After retiring from that, he enjoyed many other forms of employment including ride attendant at Arnolds Park amusement park, driving cars for an auto exchange, and currently at Menards in Spencer.
He lived many years in Round Lake, Minnesota, where he was a member of the Worthington and NWIA singles group. Helping plan and organize singles dances and social events was his greatest pleasure.
He loved 50s and 60s Rock and Roll, Country, and Southern Gospel music. He was a life time member of the Iowa Rock and Roll Music Association and a faithful long-time volunteer at Iowa Rock and Roll Museum in Arnolds Park, Iowa where he enjoyed the privilege of meeting many of the artists and the friendship of other volunteers. He also had fun giving family and friends tours of the museum and explaining some of the artifacts displayed.
On a cold wintry but beautiful January 30, 2011, after many years of bachelorhood, Paul married his beloved, Joyce Smith of Spencer, Iowa, whom he had met at one of the singles dances. Joyce had also been single for many years. As newlyweds they dove into a very active life which included new part time jobs and traveling to many places. Paul was always ready to go, it did not matter where. They loved mentoring others through Divorce Care Ministry. Together, they attended both Spencer’s First English Lutheran Church LCMS and Hope Reformed Church. Paul loved the Lord Jesus and joined Joyce in the Christian Motorcyclist’s Association (CMA) ministry, sharing the love of Christ wherever they were asked to serve. In order to become more involved in this ministry, Paul was inspired to get a motorcycle trike and discovered the amazing thrill of riding. He and Joyce enjoyed many miles of riding together this summer.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Joyce of Spencer, Iowa; daughters: Deb (Ron) Martin of Sheldon, Iowa; Deanna (Don) Mejia of Clear Lake, Minnesota; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sisters: Judy Wills of Cloquet, Minnesota; and Kathryn Smith of Middletown, Delaware; brother, Mike (Patsy) Heiller of Ocheyedan, Iowa; nieces and nephews; Joyce’s children; grandchildren; and great grandchildren; extended family and many friends.
