Thelma “Peg” Charlotte Wasson was born to parents Emilie and Fritz Liibbe on October 13, 1909. She passed away on January 19, 2013 at the age of 103 years, 3 months and 6 days. A memorial service will be held at the Vander Ploeg funeral home in Sheldon, IA on Friday, January 25th, 2013 at 10:30 AM followed by a luncheon at the First United Methodist Church. A private burial will be held prior to the service.
Peg grew up and attended school in Omaha, NE where she lived with her parents and 3 younger siblings. She took on the name “Peg” when she worked in business office where there were two other people with the name “Thelma” and that name is what she went by for the rest of her life. Peg was united in marriage to Lionel Wasson on June 6, 1935 at the St. Paul Episcopal Church in Des Moines, IA. They also lived in Seattle, WA, Hollywood, CA and Burlington, IA. Two children were born to them while they were living in Burlington, IA in the mid-40’s. Lionel moved to Sheldon in 1950 to run the Iowa Theatre and Peg and the children joined him in 1951. The family lived in the manager’s apartment above the theatre. Peg worked for the Sheldon Hospital and then for Harold Diekevers for several years. Lionel passed away in 1969 and soon after Peg’s mother came to live with her in Sheldon and did so until she had a stroke at the age of 92 and passed away at the age of 94.
Peg lived a long and healthy life, living independently until November of 2011 when she spent a short time at Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon, IA and it was decided that assisted living was necessary. She then lived several months at the Bee Hive Assisted Living, also in Sheldon. She was moved to the Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake in the summer of 2012 and that is where she passed away.
Peg was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran church in Sheldon. She loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren, to play bridge with friends and to knit and to read and did all of those until she just couldn’t any longer.
Peg is survived by her two children and their spouses, her three grandchildren and their families: Jeff and Kathy Wasson (Cohutta, GA); Pam and Virg Solsma (Hospers); Jason Solsma (Hospers) and his children Brandon and Jacob; Stacy and Rodd Mooney (Humboldt) and their children, Isaiah, Quinn, and Samson; Stephanie and Palmer Boyle (Ankeny) and their children Jackson, Faith, and Jillian. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her three younger siblings, Herbert Liibbe, Elmer Liibbe, and Evelyn Vogel.
