Valerye K. “Val” Ehlers, age 74, of Sheldon, Iowa passed away on Monday, April 22, 2024, at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon with Pastor John Jensen officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon. Visitation with the family present will be from 1:00 – 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the family to help cover her final expenses. Also a GoFundMe has been set up online, just Google “GoFundMe Valerye Ehlers”.
On April 22, 2024, while battling multiple health problems and infections, Valerye K. Ehlers passed away at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Valerye fought over three months and endured many difficult medical procedures. Valerye may have lost her battle but is alive today in the presence of her Lord, Jesus Christ.
Valerye was born on October 2, 1949, in Sheldon, Iowa, the daughter of Dwaine and Evelyn (Nelson) Dummett. She graduated from Sheldon High School in 1968 and from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree on May 14, 1972. On March 22, 1972, she married Harlan L. Ehlers in Sheldon, Iowa, and was divorced on March 2, 1983. The marriage resulted in their only son, Hugh D. Ehlers. Valerye worked all her life in various caretaking and custodial jobs. She went on a leave of absence, due to health problems, in December 2023, after working at Village Northwest Unlimited for 23 years. She was an active member at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon, Iowa, for over 40 years. She was a member of Priscilla’s circle and enjoyed her fellowship with the ladies of the group. Valerye, a wonderful mother, sister, aunt, and friend, is survived by her loving Son Hugh Ehlers, Brother Spike (Marlene) Gross, Brother David (Judy) Dummett, and many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and many friends from church, work, and the community. She is preceded in death by her Parents, Sister Pamela Rae Dummett, Brother Brad Gross, and Special Friend Lynette E. Stephens of Sheldon, Iowa.
