Monday marks the beginning of the tournament trail for four area teams in search of a Class 3A title.
Unity Christian, West Lyon, Estherville Lincoln Central and Sergeant Bluff Luton all finished in the top five in the final poll and ended up in different regions for state qualifying. All four took advantage and will be in action on Monday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
Unity Christian vs Davenport Assumption
Unity drew the top seed and will take a 23-1 record into the quarterfinals at 5:00 pm against 8 seed Davenport Assumption who comes in at 15-9.
Junior Gracie Schoonhoven leads the Knights with 26 points per game hitting 74 percent from the field, 60 percent on three point attempts and 71 percent from the free throw line. Junior Tyra Schuiteman hits for 14.7 per game and 71.2 percent from the line. Schoonhoven is the leading rebounder at 7.6 per game and the assists leader at 5.6 per contest.
The Knights of Davenport Assumption are led by junior Ava Schubert with 13.1 points per game hitting 50 percent from the floor and 74.6 percent from the free throw line. Senior Dawsen Dorsey is next at 10.4 points per game. Schubert is the rebounding leader with 6.3 per game while Dorsey leads the team in assists with 3.1 per game.
Unity averages 66 points a game while giving up 43.5. Assumption scores 46.8 per game while giving up 43.5 per contest.
West Lyon vs Roland Story
#2 seed West Lyon is 23-1 on the year and will open in the lower bracket at 8:30 against 7 seed Roland Story who comes in at 19-5.
West Lyon is led by senior Brooklyn Meyer an SDSU recruit averaging 17 points per game hitting 52 percent from the floor overall and 32 percent from behind the arc. Meyer also leads the team in rebounding with 9.4 per game. She is the assists leader as well with 3.6 per game.
The Norsemen have one player averaging double figures as well with senior Reagan Barkema averaging 15.9 per game hitting 35.7 percent on her three point shots. Barkema is the team leader in rebounds with 7.4 a game. The assists leader is senior Reece Johnson with 4.5 per game.
Roland story averages 57.6 points per game while giving up 34.5. For the Wildcats it’s 52.8 points per game while giving up 34.7.
E-LC vs SBL
In the upper bracket at 6:45 it’s 4 seed Estherville Lincoln Central at 23-2 on the season against 5 seed Sergeant Bluff Luton coming in at 20-4.
E-LC has three players averaging double figures. Freshman Haylee Stokes is the team leader at 16.8 per game hitting 55 percent from the floor, 31 percent behind the arc and 76.6 percent from the free throw line. Senior Kaitlyn Tendal averages 14.1 points per game hitting 37.8 percent behind the arc and is a 75.9 percent free throw shooter. Senior Jaydan Nitchals averages 11.7 per game and is shooting 77.8 percent from the free throw line. As a team the Midgets hit 68.7 percent.
Nichals is the rebounding leader at 6.4 per game with Stokes leading in assists with 3.1 per contest.
SBL counters with three averaging double figures as well. Junior Payton Hardy averages 18 points per game with a 54.1 percent shooting percentage. Senior Emma Salker is hitting for 14 points per game and is a 71.8 percent free throw shooter. She’s 45.7 percent on three point shots. Senior Maddie Hinkel averages 11.9 per game including 72 percent from the line.
Hardy is the leading rebounder with 8.8 per game. Salker is the assists leader with 4.4 per game. Sergeant Bluff Luton has outscored opponents 56-39 on a per game basis. For E-LC it’s been 61-36. on the season.
Central Lyon 22-2 and the #3 seed in the Class 2A quarterfinals begins play Wednesday morning at 11:45. The Lions drew 6 seed Cascade who enters the tournament at 20-4
MMCRU 24-1 and the 4 seed in 1A begins play Wednesday afternoon against 22-1 #5 seed Exira – EHK. Tip off is scheduled for 3:15
