DES MOINES, Iowa – Boyden-Hull is back at the state tournament and played on Monday like it was never away.
Coach Bill Francis and the Comets (23-2) topped Regina, Iowa City by a 61-56 count in Class 2A’s opening quarterfinal, making their first Wells Fargo Arena appearance since winning 1A back-to-back in 2012 and 2013. Those squads were renowned for their passing, teamwork, and balance, and the group headed to the 2019 semifinals appeared no different by shooting 59 percent from the field and closing out the game Regals (20-3).
Beau De Jongh paced Boyden-Hull with 25 points, and his squad led by as many as 15 with less than four minutes remaining before Regina began a furious rally to try and advance. It came up just short for coach Jared Galpin’s club, despite Masen Miller’s 17 points and the defense forcing 11 turnovers from Boyden-Hull.
The Comets had 10 assists on 20 made field goals and utilized eight players at least 10 minutes each. It gives them a seven-game win streak in Des Moines. Regina was playing in its first tournament game since 2015.
Boyden-Hull will face South Hamilton on Wednesday at 6:30 pm.
