Remsen St. Mary’s Edges Prince Of Peace

DES MOINES, Iowa – St. Mary’s, Remsen punched a ticket into the Class 1A semifinals for the third straight year by holding on to a tight 58-55 quarterfinal win over state tournament debutant Prince of Peace, Clinton on Monday.

The young Hawks (20-6) shot 49 percent from the field to win their sixth straight game overall. Coach Scott Ruden’s squad has no seniors and has finished in fourth place the last two seasons.

Prince of Peace (20-4) had four scorers in double-figures, paced by senior guard Kaidion Larson’s 16 points, but their late lead in a tense fourth quarter lasted less than 30 seconds as Spencer Schorg and Brayden Ricke made free throws for St. Mary’s down the stretch. The Irish went up 55-54 with 1:09 remaining – their only lead of the second half – before surrendering a foul to Schorg, turning it over, fouling Ricke, and missing late shot attempts.

Spencer Schorg scored 19 points and his two free throws with 45 seconds remaining gave Remsen St. Mary’s the lead for good in a 58-55 win over Clinton Prince of Peace in the class 1A quarterfinal.

Schorg talked about leading his team at the State Tournament.

The Hawks take a 20-6 record into the 1A semifinals on Wednesday’s 3:45 p.m.
