Comets Will Return to State

Orange City Iowa — Boyden Hull downed West Lyon 55-47 for the 2A Substate 2 title Saturday night. The game was played at the MOC Floyd Valley High School Gym. Seeding for the Boys 2A Tournament will come on Monday so the Comets won’t know their opponent until them.

West Lyon took a 12-11 first quarter lead as Jalyn Gramstad hit his second three of the quarter as the Buzzer went off. At halftime the Comets had pulled in front 33-21 behind a 13 point quarter from Tanner Te Slaa. At the end of the third quarter the Wildcat’s Zach Van Beek hit a three as time expired to cut the Boyden Hull lead to 43-35. Van Beek struck again from behind the line to start the fourth and the lead was down to 5 with the fourth quarter just getting under way. That’s where the benefits of playing in tight games this season came into play for the Comets.

That’s Boyden Hull Head Coach Bill Francis. Tanner Te Slaa would finish as the game’s top scorer with 30 points including an 8-of-8 performance from the line in the fourth quarter as the Wildcats were forced to foul. With the Comets hitting their free throws the final would be 55-47 in favor of Boyden Hull.

West Lyon put three players in double figures. Zach Van Beek hit a trio of threes on the night and finished with 13 points. Jalyn Gramstad knocked down 13 as well and they were joined by Logan Meyer with a 12 point game.

With the loss West Lyon finishes at 14-11 on the year with an appearance in the Substate game. The Comets will take a 21-3 record into the 2A State Tournament. Coach Francis talked about the return trip to Des Moines and how happy he is for his players.

In other post game comments Francis talked about how well this years edition of the Comets play as a team.

We also asked the coach about the plan leading up to the State Tournament.
