Dick Jungers to Receive IGHSAU Golden Plaque of Distinction

Dick JungersNorthwest Iowa — Newell-Fonda coach Dick Jungers is the 2017 basketball recipient of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Golden Plaque of Distinction Award. The Sheldon native will receive his award at halftime of the Class 2A State Championship game in Des Moines on Friday March 3rd. The Golden Plaque of Distinction honors the Iowa coach who has demonstrated a successful career while making notable contributions toward school, community and the coaching profession.

Jungers has been coaching girls’ basketball at Newell-Fonda for 15 years and collected his 300th career win this season. During his tenure, he has led the Mustangs to 12  conference championships while eight Newell-Fonda teams have reached the state tournament. Three of his teams have placed second in Class 1A and his 2015 squad captured the Class 1A state title.

Jungers also enjoyed a successful tenure as Newell-Fonda’s softball coach. In 13 seasons, he won nine conference titles and reached the state tournament seven times, winning the 1A state crown in 2008.

Dick serves as the Newell-Fonda PK-8 principal. The Sheldon native graduated from Buena Vista University in 1996. Dick is the father of Trey and Kierra and the son of Fred & Elaine Jungers.
