Dordt Baseball Drops Two Nailbiters To Morningside

Sioux Center, Iowa — Dordt dropped a Friday doubleheader with Morningside in Sioux Center.

Dordt battled back from a pair of deficits but couldn’t get over the hump and lost an 8-7 decision to Morningside in game one.

The Defenders scored first with a run in the second when Parker Hamann scored after Andrew Pullar got caught in a rundown on a pickoff play at first base. Dordt added to the lead with a run in the third when Austin Pullar grounded out to shortstop with one out, pushing Pullar across from third.

In the top of the fourth the Mustangs scored on a homerun to rightfield that was aided by a gusty wind and the visitors capitalized on a pair of Dordt errors to score an unearned run.

Dordt was able to rally in the seventh with Logan Cline singling with one out. Chase Edwards then walked and Nick Hamilton lifted a high fly ball that the wind played havoc with. The ball actually dropped but the infield fly was in effect. After a lengthy delay it was ruled the call was made late and the runner from second, who had tried to advance, was put back on second base with two outs. John Emerson then delivered a single that tied the game and sent the game to extra innings.

Both teams went scoreless in the eighth inning and Morningside knocked in five in the ninth. Dordt answered with four in the ninth but left the tying run at second base when the third out was recorded.

Dordt outhit the Mustangs 13-9 and both teams had three errors. Logan Cline had three singles and walked twice and scored two runs. Chase Edwards had two singles and two runs batted in. Nick Hamilton had a single and a homerun and three runs batted in and Andrew Pullar had two singles.

Gyeongju Kim started the game and went seven innings and struck out seven with three bases on balls. Nick Yeager pitched two innings and struck four and was saddled with the loss.

Morningside’s Camden Parks got the win in relief.

Dordt and Morningside battled in game two of Friday evening’s doubleheader.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning, but Dordt earned half of those runs back in the bottom part of the inning, scoring three runs on three hits. Austin Pullar hit a leadoff double, and John Emerson brought him in for Dordt’s first run of the game. Nick Hamilton’s sacrifice fly to left scored Emerson, and Logan Cline scored on Connor Hommes’ double.

After Luke Turner threw a 1-2-3 top of the 2nd, the Defenders came within one run after Austin Pullar and Emerson scored on Chase Edwards’ single.

Dordt took a 9-6 lead in the bottom of the 4th inning, as the Defenders batted through the order to spend most of the inning with runners on all three bases.

With a three-run Dordt lead, Morningside took back the lead in the top of the 6th, drawing a series of walks and utilizing timely hitting to bring in four runs on two hits.

The Defenders went in front once again in the bottom of the 6th with an RBI double for Emerson and an RBI single by Edwards.

Following a short delay in the top of the 7th, Morningside used a sacrifice bunt to get their runner to third, who later scored to tie the game.
