Dordt Baseball Splits Thrillers With Mount Marty

Sioux Center, Iowa — A wild back and forth affair capped with a six run comeback in the seventh inning resulted in a 16-15 Dordt win in game one of a doubleheader with Mount Marty on Saturday afternoon in Sioux Center.

Mount Marty started the scoring with a Kiko Nunez homerun in the first inning for a 3-0 lead but Dordt answered with Logan Cline leading off with a homerun and Dylan Stanley singled in a run followed by Aaron Eshelman’s single that tied the score at 3-3. Eshelman and Stanley then scored on a Logan De Vries homerun for a 6-3 lead.

Mount Marty rallied with solo homeruns in the third and fourth and tied the score on a Nunez single. Chase Edwards singled to centerfield in the home half of the fourth to score Parker Hamann and Aaron Eshelman homered in the fifth for an 8-6 lead.

Mount Marty rallied to take the lead with three runs in the sixth but Dordt got another run scoring single by Edwards for a 9-9 tie. In the seventh Mount Marty scored six, the last four on a Nunez grand slam and the Lancers led 15-9 entering the last half of the seventh.

Dordt got two runs on an error with the bases loaded and Luke November singled in a run to get within 15-12. A wild pitch scored another run and put runners at second and third with one out. Cade Hollingsworth came in to pinch hit and promptly sent a shot into threes beyond the left field fence for a 16-15 win.

Dordt banged out 17 hits and overcame two errors to secure the win.

Luke November tied a Dordt record and became the fifth player in program history to record five hits in a game.

Chase Edwards and Aaron Eshelman each had three hits and Logan Cline had two hits with three runs scored.

Eshelman and Parker Hamann each had three runs scored.

Carter Scott got his first collegiate pitching win and gave up two hits and was charged with two runs in relief.

The Dordt Defenders were unable to hold a 4-1 lead and lost a 6-4 marathon to the Mount Marty Lancers in game two of their doubleheader on Saturday in Sioux Center.

The Defenders allowed a solo homerun in the first inning but it was Dylan Stanley tying the game with a homerun in the fourth inning. Logan Cline put Dordt up 2-1 when he knocked a solo shot over the left field fence for his sixth homerun of the season in the fifth inning.

Chase Edwards added to the lead with a two-run shot later in the inning.

The lead held into the seventh when Mount Marty got a two-run homerun to get within 4-3. Leading by the run the Defenders surrendered a homerun by David Richardson to tie it. Dordt had a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth with runners at first and second and Brock Spade reached on a hit fielded by the shortstop near the outfield grass. Jae Kim attempted to score from second on the play but was cut down at the plate.

Dordt also got Aaron Eshelman on in the 11th inning but he was stranded at second after getting there with one out.

Mount Marty eventually scored two in the 12th and Dordt was retired for the 6-4 final.

Dordt had three hits each from Logan Cline and Chase Edwards. Both scored a run and Cline had a run batted in and Edwards had two.

Both teams had 12 hits and Dordt was hindered by four errors.

Dordt used six pitchers with Nick Yeager going six and two-third innings with eight hits and two earned runs allowed and he struck out nine.

Willem Hoekstra pitched an inning and a third of scoreless baseball.

Mount Marty’s Heston Williams got the win in relief with five hits allowed in five innings and he struck out eight.

Dordt is 11-19 overall and 7-7 in the GPAC and Mount Marty is 25-9 overall and 10-4 in the league.

The teams will play another doubleheader on Monday, April 11 at 4:00.
