Dordt Men Square Off Against Morningside Tonight

The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team will travel to face Morningside in Sioux City on Wednesday, December 2 tipping off at 8:00.

The Morningside men are 6-1 this season and 2-1 in the GPAC with an 85-73 loss to Jamestown on November 11 the only blemish so far. The Mustangs have won four games in a row since that time and squeezed by Northwestern on a buzzer beater last week 79-77.

Jim Sykes’s team is outscoring teams 77.9-69 and outrebound teams 38-27.7. Morningside Is converting 48.2 percent of its field goal attempts and allow opponents to make 43.9. Morningside gets to the free throw line almost ten more times than its opponents.

The Defender men are 6-2 after beating Kansas Wesleyan (83-80), Bellevue (87-76), Viterbo (77-67), Presentation (98-59), Midland (83-72) and Briar Cliff (86-69). The Defenders suffered their first loss of the season on November 18 by an 80-78 score to Dakota Wesleyan and also lost to Concordia 82-59 on Saturday, November 21 in Seward.

Dordt converts 49 percent of its field goals while outscoring teams 81.4-73.1 and the Defenders try nearly eight more free throws per game than opponents. Dordt has outrebounded teams 38.9-34.9 and limit opponents to 43 percent field goal shooting and 32.4 percent three-point shooting. Dordt also makes 49 percent of its shots and 33 percent from the arc.

Garrett Franken scores 15.5 points per game with 6.8 rebounds and he hands out just over two assists per game. Jesse Jansma scores 14.5 points per game with a team high 4.0 assists per game and he is making 46.5 percent of his field goals. Jacob Vis is scoring 14.0 points per game with 7.5 rebounds and he is making 64.5 percent of his field goal tries and has a team high eight blocked shots. Cade Bleeker adds 10.8 points per game and Bryce Coppock is averaging 7.8. Camden Bialas and Ben Gesink are at 5.5 and 5.3 points per game and Dejay Fykstra is averaging 4.8.

Dordt will host Doane on Saturday, December 5 and will travel to Jamestown on Tuesday, December 8.
