Dordt Softball Dominates Waldorf

Sioux Center, Iowa — The Dordt Defenders picked up a non-conference win at home on Wednesday, defeating the Waldorf Warriors 11-3 in 5 innings.

Neither team scored in the first inning, and Waldorf took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd as Katie Gil crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice groundout.

Waldorf added to their lead in the top of the 4th when Katie Chapman hit a double, scoring the runner from second. Later in the inning, Karina Prieto hit an RBI single to give Waldorf a 3-0 lead.

The Defenders responded with a high scoring output in the bottom of the 4th, scoring ten runs on nine hits. Chandler Schemper led off and was hit by a pitch, and the next two batters reached to load the bases. Erin Bredemus had the first RBI of the inning on a single to the middle infield. Following Brooklyn Van Oort’s RBI single to make the score 3-2, Kayla Zevenbergen doubled, driving in three runs. Rachel Evavold, in her second at-bat of the inning, hit a 2-RBI double. The final two runs of the inning came on Hannah Sikkema’s double to left-center field that scored Schemper and Evavold.

Taylor Knaack pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 5th, and Kenzie Cunard drove in the 11th run of the game for the Defenders in the bottom of the inning, ending the game.

Dordt used an early lead to finalize the doubleheader sweep versus Waldorf, winning 8-0 in five innings.

The Defenders were first to put runs on the scoreboard, ending the 1st inning with a 1-0 lead. Chandler Schemper hit a one-out triple and Rachel Evavold hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Schemper to score.

Dordt added another run in the bottom of the 2nd when Emma Veenstra scored following her double at the plate.

In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Hailey Heeringa hit a two-out RBI single that allowed Hannah Sikkema to score, giving the Defenders a 3-0 lead.

The Defenders added five runs in the 4th, with Kenzie Cunard hitting a sacrifice fly to score Ivy Terpstra for the first run of the inning. Later, with two runners on base, Evavold singled to center field, allowing Jessica Flaherty and Karli Olsen to cross home plate. With two outs, Heeringa doubled to bring in Schemper and Evavold and giving Dordt an 8-0 lead.

Kayla Zevenbergen came in to pitch in the bottom of the 5th and held Waldorf to only one hit.

The Defenders will host Concordia in the final game of the regular season. The doubleheader will begin at 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 1.
