Dordt Softball Drops Doubleheader To Concordia

Sioux Center, Iowa — Dordt faced Concordia in game one of the doubleheader on Senior Day, as the Bulldogs defeated the Defenders with a strong pitching performance and offensive output.

Concordia jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a leadoff home run by Hhana Haro. The next two batters proceeded to reach on singles, but Dordt kept the scoring to a minimum to end the inning.

The next run came in the bottom of the 2nd inning, as Dordt was able to tie the game at 1. Hannah Sikkema reached on an error and later scored on Chandler Schemper’s bunt single.

The Bulldogs retook the lead 2-1 in the 3rd when Camry Moore hit an RBI double to center field. In the next inning, Caitlyn McGarvie hit a leadoff single and later scored on Haro’s RBI single, followed by an error that led to another run. The Concordia lead was extended to 5-1 when Allysia Thayer hit an RBI single to right.

The Defenders gained a run back in the bottom of the 5th as Brooklyn Van Oort hit a leadoff double, later scoring on a fielder’s choice. However, Concordia held on to the lead for the remainder of the contest, winning today’s conference matchup.

Dordt’s late-inning rally was held off by Concordia in the final game of the regular season, and the Bulldogs came away with a 7-6 win.

The Defenders were first to score in the bottom of the 1st, as Kenzie Cunard started the inning drawing a walk. After reaching second on a stolen base and third on a fielder’s choice, Cunard scored on a passed ball to put Dordt up 1-0.

Concordia took a 3-1 lead in their half of the 3rd inning, putting their first five runners on base and using a Camryn Moore single in the right-center gap to score their first two runs. Kylee Nixon then hit a sacrifice fly to center field for the third run of the inning.

Dordt brought the Concordia lead down to 1 in the bottom of the 3rd when Rachel Evavold hit a sacrifice fly that advanced Cunard to third, who then scored on a passed ball.

The Bulldogs scored three runs on two hits in the 5th, as Regan Karel hit a double with runners on first and second, one scoring on the play. Brena Brown then hit a single with two runners in scoring position, giving the Bulldogs a 7-2 lead.

Dordt put a run together in the 5th and 6th innings, as Karli Olsen drew a leadoff walk in the 5th and came around to score. In the 6th inning, Dordt scored three runs in part to Emma Veenstra’s 2-RBI double. Chandler Schemper was at the plate following a pitching change and singled to allow Brooklyn Van Oort to score.

The Defenders faced a one-run deficit in the bottom of the 7th, and Concordia only faced four batters in the inning to complete the win.

The 2021 regular season has now concluded. The Defenders finished with a record of 21-25 (8-14).
