Dordt Softball Splits Friday Doubleheader

Kissimmee, Florida — Dordt and Ave Maria played in a close matchup on Friday, with Ave Maria using a big 5th inning to pick up a 3-1 win, and Dordt claimed an extra-innings win over Calumet on Friday afternoon, scoring in the top of the 8th inning to break the late-game tie.

The Defenders opened the scoring in the 3rd inning, as Karli Olsen put the ball in play and reached on an error. With Olsen at second, Jessica Oules hit a single through the middle that allowed Olsen to score.

The next runs came in the 5th inning for Ave Maria, with Christina Cataldo opening the inning with a leadoff single, followed by two more baserunners coming around to score on Angela Cataldo’s 2-RBI triple.

Becky Pedersen hit a two-out double in the 7th inning, but Ave Maria’s Kassandra Clark earned the final out to pick up the complete game win.

Jessica Oules was 1-3 with 1 RBI. Kenzie Cunard was 1-3 with a double. Becky Pedersen was 1-3 with a double. Abby Kraemer had 6 strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched

In game 2, both Dordt and Calumet had runners in scoring position through the first three innings of play, but were unable to turn them into runs, keeping the score knotted at 0-0.

Calumet had two runners on base in the bottom of the 7th, and Rachel Evavold pitched out of the situation to give Dordt another opportunity in extra innings.

With Chandler Schemper starting the inning at second base as a result of the international tie breaker, Kenzie Cunard hit a one-out single to shallow right field that brought in the first run of the game.

Calumet had runners on first and third with one out in the bottom half of the inning, and Dordt’s defense turned a double play on the lineout to second and a return throw to first for the final out.

Kenzie Cunard drove in the game-winning run and went 2-4. Jessica Oules was 2-3 at the plate

The Defenders had 4 stolen bases. Rachel Evavold pitched an 8-inning shutout

Dordt will host their first home games of the season next Thursday, March 18 at 4:00 and 6:00 pm.
