Dordt Softball Splits With Concordia

Seward, Nebraska — The Dordt Defender softball team was a 2-0 winner Saturday in game one of their doubleheader at Concordia. Abby Kraemer was masterful on the mound and the Dordt offense got one run in the second and another in the fifth for the win.

Dordt got a run in the second inning when Aurora Tyson singled and advanced to second on a ground out. Ivy Terpstra delivered a two-out double to get the Defenders on the board. Karli Olsen knocked in Dordt’s run in the fifth after Terpstra reached on an error and went to second on a ground out. Terpstra gained third on a passed ball and then scored on Olsen’s single.

That’s all the offense either team mustered in the game dominated by the starting pitchers.

Abby Kraemer pitched seven innings and allowed two hits and struck out eight with no walks.

Olsen, Chandler Schemper, Brooklyn Van Oort, Tyson, Terpstra and Jessica Oules all accounted for a hit in Dordt’s six-hit attack. Schemper and Terpstra each had doubles.

Van Oort and Olsen each had stolen bases.

A three run fifth inning by the hosts was too much for the Dordt Defenders to overcome in game two of their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Seward, Nebraska. The hosts held on for a 4-2 win to salvage a split in the opening day of Great Plains Athletic Conference play for the Defenders.

Concordia scored a run in the first inning with Dordt answering in the fourth inning. Jessica Flaherty singled in Emma Groen for the run after Groen led off the inning with a double.

The Bulldogs knocked four hits in the fifth inning and scored three runs to lead 4-1 and Dordt didn’t threaten again until the seventh inning when they managed to get a run in but left the bases loaded. Flaherty and Jessi Oules led off the inning with a single and Kenzi Cunard got on with a fielder’s choice to load the bases.

A flyout by Karli Olsen pushed Flaherty in and Chandler Schemper walked to load the bases. A lineout and fly out ended the inning and the game for the Defenders.

Jessica Flaherty and Jessi Oules each had two hits as Dordt was outhit 8-7.

Karli Olsen and Flaherty each had rbi.

Taylor Knaack took the loss with five innings pitched and four runs allowed with one strikeout and no walks. Hailey Wilkin pitched the sixth inning and retired the three batters she faced.

Knaack is now 3-2.

The Defenders are 11-8-1 this season and 1-1 in the GPAC.

Concordia is 12-12 and 1-3 in league play.

Dordt will host Briar Cliff on Tuesday, March 29.
