Dordt Volleyball Goes 1-1 On Friday

La Crosse, Wisconsin — Dordt matched up with Carroll College for the second time this season, and the Defenders took a four-set victory in both meetings with the Fighting Saints.

Set one was controlled by the Defenders, taking an early lead and never trailing. Dordt went on a 4-0 run to take a 13-6 lead on a block from Jessi Franken and Campbell Marshall, and after Carroll got two points back, Corrina Timmermans had a successful attack attempt to put Dordt up 15-9. Carroll had a late comeback attempt but it was not enough as Alli Timmermans scored the final three Defender points to give Dordt a 1-0 advantage.

The Defenders jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the second, but Carroll chipped away at their deficit to eventually tie it at 17. Dordt scored the next three points, which led to a Saints timeout, which shifted the momentum back to Carroll. Lexi Mikkelsen and Taelyr Krantz added the final two points to tie the match at one set each.

Carroll led the way for most of the third set, at one point holding a 16-11 lead. Dordt fought back to tie the game with a kill from Jessi Franken, and following a Carroll timeout, maintained a slim lead. With the game tied at 23, Ava Van Soelen and Alli Timmermans each added a kill on assists from Megan Raszler, winning set three 25-23.

It was another quick start for Carroll in set four, who opened with a 12-3 lead over the Defenders. After a Dordt timeout, the two teams traded points and then Dordt went on a 5-0 run capped off by a service ace from Mia Gamet. The Defenders continued to rally and eventually took a 19-18 lead on a kill from Ava Van Soelen. With the score tied at 22, Carroll committed two attack errors and Jessi Franken added a kill to close out the win for Dordt.

The Defender women’s volleyball team played against Viterbo in game two of Friday’s doubleheader, a game that saw the V-Hawks defeat the Defenders in three sets.

The first set opened well for Dordt, who started with a 3-0 lead in part from a kill for Corrina Timmermans along with a block for Timmermans and Brenna Krommendyk. Viterbo then went out to a 12-6 lead, forcing a timeout from Dordt. The V-Hawks continued to build their lead throughout the set, and a late Defender rally was put to an end to give Viterbo a 25-16 set one win.

The home team kept momentum on their side, opening with a 7-4 lead in set two. Dordt scored on an attack error out of the timeout, but Viterbo scored five of the next six points, setting up a 25-15 win in the second set.

The third set opened with both teams trading points, and with the score knotted at 10 each, Viterbo went on a 10-0 run, helping close the match in three sets.
