Irvine, California — The Dordt Defender women’s basketball team controlled most of its contest with Westcliff on Saturday afternoon in Irvine, California on the way to a 72-59 win over the Warriors in non-conference basketball.
Dordt took the lead for good with a Karly Gustafson basket in the first quarter to go up 13-12 and held a 19-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. Dordt’s defensive stifled the Warriors in the second quarter, outscoring the hosts 15-2 for a 34-20 lead at halftime.
Dordt extended the lead to as many as 17 but the Warriors made a late run and got a buzzer beater at the end of the third to get within 52-41. The lead shrunk to 54-44 but Dordt went on a 12-2 run to lead 66-46 with five minutes remaining and Dordt held on to win by 13.
Dordt was 27-57 from the field for 47 percent success and Westcliff was 23-58 for 40 percent.
Dordt had a 43-28 rebounding advantage and both teams had 11 turnovers.
Ashtyn Veerbeek had 19 points and nine rebounds with three assists and a steal.
Karly Gustafson had 11 points and 10 rebounds while Macey Nielson had nine off the bench with two made three-point baskets.
Janie Schoonhoven added eight points and six rebounds.
Dordt is now 8-6 overall while Westcliff is 2-7.
Dordt will face LaSierra on Monday night at 8:00 (Central).
