Sioux Center, Iowa — Dordt picked up an important conference win Saturday as the Defenders defeated Jamestown 84-70 at home.
The Defenders jumped out to an early 6-2 lead on a Karly Gustafson jump shot in the opening minutes and later stretched their lead to as much as 13-6 on Janie Schoonhoven’s made basket, forcing a timeout. The quarter ended with a 19-12 lead in an impressive showing on both sides of the court.
Hayden Heimensen made one of her three baskets from beyond the arc to begin the second, allowing Dordt to extend the lead to 10 points. Jamestown fought back within five until a Macey Nielson three put the Defender lead to double-digits at the four-minute mark. Dordt closed the half with a 41-29 advantage.
After the Defenders took a 14-point lead into the final quarter, Jamestown upped their full court pressure and forced stops to make it a 71-66 game on Kia Tower’s three with 2:29 to go. In the final minutes, Dordt was able to get to the line often, as their final thirteen points came from 10 made free throws and a three by Faith Van Holland. With the win, Dordt moved into sixth place in the conference standings with a 5-5 league

Ashtyn Veerbeek had a double-double of 24 points and 13 rebounds
Karly Gustafson scored 17 points
Hayden Heimensen had 12 points, including three made three-pointers
Hannah DeMars led Jamestown in scoring with 18 points
The Defenders will continue GPAC play on the road next Wednesday at Doane. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM in Crete, Nebraska.
