Dordt came up with a conference win in a low-scoring competition with Midland on Saturday. The Defenders opened with an 8-2 lead through the first four minutes and maintained the lead through the first quarter. A made basket in the paint by Erika Feenstra stretched Dordt’s lead to 7 at 15-8 before Midland came back within three at the end of the quarter.
Midland then used a 9-0 run in the middle of the second to take a 23-20 lead off of Lexis Hasse’s steal and score. The score remained close through the rest of the half as the Warriors took a 29-27 halftime lead after an offensive rebound and second chance points in the final minute of the second quarter.
Midland’s lead stretched to as much as eight points in the third quarter at 47-39, but the Defenders started to chip away at the deficit with a three from Macey Nielson, a made shot by Karly Gustafson, and two more threes by Nielson to even the score at 50 late in the third quarter, as Nielson totaled nine points in the third quarter alone.
After Ashtyn Veerbeek’s free throws with five minutes to go tied the game at 56, Midland answered with a three by Lexis Haase. The Warriors had a 63-58 lead at the 2:23 mark, but out of the timeout, Dordt scored the final nine points of the contest. Erika Feenstra made a two point jumpshot, Ashtyn Veerbeek added a couple of free throws, and Macey Nielson made a three in the corner to give the Defenders a 65-63 lead with 13 seconds left. Following a defensive stop, Erika Feenstra sealed the win with two made free throws, giving Dordt their seventh conference win of the season.
