Dordt Women Host Morningside Wednesday

Sioux Center, Iowa — Dordt will host the Morningside Mustangs in women’s GPAC basketball on Wednesday night, February 2 starting at 6:00.

The Morningside Mustangs are the conference leader with a four game lead in the standings with six games remaining. The Sioux City, Iowa school boasts a 20-3 record and a 15-1 conference mark with 12 game current winning streak dating back to a 65-54 win over the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon on December 18. The Mustangs’ last loss was a 78-77 setback at Northwestern on December 11 and the other two losses came to Saint Xavier and Olivet Nazarene to open the season.

The Defenders are 18-6 this season and 11-5 in GPAC play and are on an 11 game winning streak dating back to a pair of wins in California over Westcliff and La Sierra on December 18 and 20. The last loss for Dordt was a December 11 setback to Dakota Wesleyan.

Dordt has outscored teams 74.1-64.6 and outrebound teams 40-34. The Defenders also convert 43 percent of their field goals and 31 percent of the three-point shots they take. Teams are converting 39 percent of their field goals against Dordt and 32 percent of their three-point shots.

Ashtyn Veerbeek leads the team with an 18.7 points per game average and 9.3 rebounds and Bailey Beckman is converting 12.2 points per outing with a team best 44 made three-point shots. Karly Gustafson adds 11.1 points per game and 7.9 rebounds and Janie Schoonhoven scores 8.2 with 5.6 rebounds. Hayden Heimensen and Macey Nielson each have 27 made three-point shots and Heimensen and Mya Chmielewski have 7.7 and 7.2 points per game scored respectively.

The Mustangs were 83-64 winners over Dordt on November 17 after taking a 27-13 first quarter lead and a 46-29 halftime edge. Bailey Beckman scored 17 in the loss for the Defenders and Karly Gustafson added eight points and six rebounds. Taylor Rodenburgh scored 19 with six rebounds and Sierra Mitchell was good for 17 points and five assists with four rebounds.
