Yankton, South Dakota — Dordt used an 11-0 run to start and outscored the Lancers 18-7 over the final quarter en route to a 72-48 road win in a conference match-up played Saturday in Yankton, S.D.
The Defenders pushed their win streak to three and improved to 3-5 in the GPAC, 10-6 overall. They have won four of their last five games.
Ashtyn Veerbeek led the Defenders with 16 points and nine rebounds, missing out on her fourth double-double of the season by one rebound. Karly Gustafson played an outstanding game, contributing 12 points, five rebounds and matched her career-best with five assists. Bailey Beckman scored 10 points, giving the Defenders three players in double figures.
Dordt raced out to an 11-0 lead, getting baskets by four different players, during the opening four minutes. A three-point play from Hayden Heimensen put the Defenders in front 16-4 and they led 23-12 at the end of the first quarter.
The Defenders led by as many as 18 (37-19) after a lay-up from Mya Chmielewski with 3:50 left in the second quarter. Mount Marty managed to trim the lead down to 12 by halftime, 39-27.
Dordt led 54-41 after an evenly played third quarter but outscored the Lancers 18-7 over the final period to pull away. The Defenders limited Mount Marty to just one field goal over the final six minutes.
The Defenders shot 45% for the game, 36% (5/14) from beyond the arc, and held a commanding 21-10 advantage in free throws made.
Mount Marty shot 37% from the field and was led by Eve Miller with 16 points. The Lancers shot 2-of-16 from the three-point line.
Dordt will host a pair of teams, Hastings and the University of Jamestown, next weekend (Jan. 7 -8).
