Dordt Women Take Care Of Briar Cliff

Sioux City, Iowa — Dordt’s strong start propelled them to a win in the final game of the regular season on Saturday at Briar Cliff, defeating the Chargers 75-42.

The Defenders fell behind early as Briar Cliff opened the game with a 5-0 lead, but Dordt battled back to tie take a 9-7 lead off of Hilary Albrecht’s basket and did not trail for the remainder of the game. Dordt stretched their lead to 10 points with just over two minutes to go in the first quarter with a three pointer from Macey Nielson. In the final seconds of the opening quarter, Ashtyn Veerbeek scored, giving Dordt a 28-14 lead.

Dordt continued their efficient shooting through the first five minutes of the second, going on a 7-0 run to increase their lead to 21 points off of Mya Chmielewski’s basket off of the steal and assist from Siennah Stamness. Dordt held their lead at around 20 points into the break, as Erika Feenstra scored two of her 14 points ahead of halftime, and Dordt had a 42-21 halftime advantage.

The Defenders maintained their strong scoring output in the second half and limited Briar Cliff’s scoring opportunities, including a three to open the fourth quarter from Siennah Stamness, and Karly Gustafson’s made shot from beyond the arc at the midway point of the quarter. The Defenders will play Briar Cliff on Wednesday night in the GPAC Quarterfinals.

Erika Feenstra was the leading scorer with 14 points. Ashtyn Veerbeek scored 13 points and had 13 rebounds. Karly Gustafson scored 11 points

Dordt is now 15-10 and Briar Cliff is 16-9

Dordt will play at Briar Cliff in the quarterfinals of the GPAC Women’s Basketball Tournament. The game is set to begin at 7:00 pm.
