Le Mars Iowa — The first round of the Class 1A girls basketball tournament got underway Thursday night. Gehlen Catholic hosted George Little Rock in Region 1 and posted a 58-38 home win to move on to the quarterfinals on Tuesday February 18th. The Jays will host Storm Lake St. Mary’s who downed St. Edmond 56-29 in their tournament opener.
Gehlen led at all the breaks. They were up early 17-9 at the end of the first quarter and led 26-19 at the half. The Jays took control of the game in the third quarter as they moved in front 44-29 at the end of the quarter. They would eventually get the win 58-38.
Gehlen had three players in double figures getting a game high 24 points from Lauren Heying. Sydney Livermore was next with 13 followed by Chloe Bunkers who enjoyed a 10 point night. Two Mustangs hit double figures. Mackensie Post had a team high 16 points with Lauren Jurrens netting 13.
With the win Gehlen Catholic improves to 12-9 on the year. George Little Rock will finish the season at 2-20.
