It will be the Hartley Melvin Sanborn Hawks against the Western Christian Wolfpack for the Class 2A District 2 boys basketball title next Tuesday in Spirit Lake. HMS advanced with a 79-75 overtime win over Sheldon with Western Christian posting a 69-49 win over Okoboji at the Western Chrsitian gym Thursday night.
In the first game of the night HMS led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter. At the half the lead was 26-25. The Margin stayed at one point 41-40 in favor of HMS at the end of the third quarter. At the end of regulation a three by Sheldon’s Ian Jongewaard at the buzzer sent the game into overtime where the Hawks got the win 79-75.
HMS had four players in double figures led by Blake Simonds with a game high 25. He Was joined by Brian Perez with 16 points, Daniel Heitritter with 14 and Jordan Jappenga with 13 points. Sheldon was led by Collin Wolthuzien with 21, Dylan Ennema with 18 and Ian Jongewaard with 14 points.
With the Win the Hawks improve to 13-10 on the year while the Orabs close the season at 14-8.
In the second semifinal of the night Okoboji stayed with the Wolfpack for the first half. Western led 18-12 at the end of the first quarter and extended that to a 31-22 halftime lead. With a run to start the second half the Wolfpack were in control 49-36 at the end of the third quarter. That momentum carried into the fourth quarter as Western Christian posted their 20th win of the season 69-49.
Western had three players in double figures getting 16 each from Josh Van Lingen and Ben Gesink. Taylor Miedema hit for 13 points including four 3-point buckets in the contest. Okoboji was led by Tyler Stumbo with 18 points and Houston Hawkins with 14 including four 3-pointers of his own.
With the win Western Christian improves to 20-2 on the season while Okoboji ends the year at 8-14.
