Iowa AD Gary Barta Talks About Reinstating Women’s Swimming And Diving

Iowa City, Iowa — Iowa athletic director Gary Barta says legal action was a major reason women’s swimming and diving was reinstated on Monday.

The program was one of four that was eliminated last August when Barta expected a 75 million dollar deficit due to the pandemic. A lawsuit was filed in September and a recent injunction mandated continuation of the sport during the legal process. Barta says the decision takes away uncertainty surrounding the program.

Barta was not sure how long the legal process would take.

Barta projected a 75 million dollar deficit in August without a football season. Because there was an abbreviated football season the deficit is now projected to be between 50 and 75 million dollars.
