Ames, Iowa—Iowa State’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Discover Ames are teaming up to bring the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s state soccer championships to Ames for three years, starting in 2025, officials from all three organizations announced today.
Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said, “We are proud that the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union selected Iowa State and the Ames community to host the state girls’ soccer championships, culminating with the championship games at the Cyclone Sports Complex, and we look forward to providing an outstanding experience for all of the teams that reach Ames for the championship rounds. This is a tremendous opportunity to showcase our campus, facilities and community to visitors from all around the state, and we look forward to welcoming them throughout this championship event.”
The initial agreement between the parties covers the 2025-2027 championships with options to extend the relationship for future years. The 2025 championship is slated for June 2-7 with the quarterfinals and semifinals to be played at Lied and the Maple/Willow/Larch fields with the championship games for all classes taking place at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
Jean Berger, Executive Director of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union said, “We are extremely pleased to partner with Discover Ames and Iowa State University for our state girls’ soccer championship. Kevin (Bourke) and his Discover Ames team are experienced hosts and the Iowa State facilities will provide a true championship experience for our teams. Ames and the Iowa Girl are a natural fit and we’re excited to see how together we can continue to grow and improve our tournament.”
Opened in 2013, the $13 million Cyclone Sports Complex is home to the Iowa State soccer team. The state-of-the-art facility features a natural grass playing surface, locker rooms and a training room, as well as seating for 1,500 spectators. A new video board and sound system are slated to be installed at the venue ahead of ISU’s 2024 fall season.
“We’re so excited to host the girls state soccer championships at Iowa State University in 2025,” said Kevin Bourke, President and CEO of Discover Ames. “I’m thankful the Girls Union has the confidence to bring the soccer championship to Ames and Iowa State University. We plan to create a remarkable and memorable experience for the players, coaches, and fans.”
