Iowa State Downs No. 8 Oklahoma State On Homecoming

AMES — Xavier Hutchinson had two touchdown catches among his career-high 12 receptions and Iowa State made a big fourth-down stop near the end to beat No. 8 Oklahoma State 24-21 at MidAmerican Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday.

A crowd of 61,500 — the third sellout in four home games — saw the Cyclones (5-2, 3-1 Big 12) win for the ninth-straight time in league play on their own field, the longest active streak in the conference, and hand the Cowboys their first loss of the season. Brock Purdy put together his 13th career 300-yard passing game and Breece Hall scored a rushing touchdown in his 19th straight game, adding to his Big 12 record.

With the victory, Iowa State coach Matt Campbell has defeated every team in the league both at home and on the road. It’s the fourth time the Cyclones have knocked off a Top 10 team under Campbell, now in his sixth season, and the 10th time they’ve defeated a ranked team in his tenure.

The game matched the top two teams in the league in total defense and fittingly, it came down to a defensive play in the final 69 seconds.

Iowa State had taken a 24-21 lead on Hall’s 4-yard touchdown run with 5:29 remaining. After an exchange of punts, Oklahoma State (6-1, 3-1) mounted a drive from its own 24 and reached the ISU 42, facing fourth-and-2. Spencer Sanders flipped a short pass to Brennan Presley, who was met by the Cyclones’ Kym-Mani King and Isheem Young and stopped inches short of a first down with 1:09 remaining.

The Cyclones celebrated the stop, then ran out the clock in the seventh-straight one-possession game between the two rivals.

Hutchinson finished with 12 catches for 125 yards, including TD receptions of 1 and 9 yards from Purdy. It was the fourth 100-yard receiving game of Hutchinson’s career.

Purdy again was super efficient, completing 27-of-33 passes for 307 yards and no interceptions. In his last three games, all victories, Purdy is 66-of-80 for 760 yards, seven TDs and no interceptions.

Hall finished with 70 tough yards in 21 carries against a team that ranks just behind league-leading Iowa State in rushing defense. He also caught two passes for 37 yards, including a 30-yard reception on the six-play, 85-yard drive that produced his go-ahead touchdown.

Iowa State pulled ahead for the first time at 17-14 on Andrew Mevis’ 29-yard field goal late in the third quarter. OSU regained the lead on Sanders’ 20-yard touchdown pass to Tay Martin, who got a toe down on the right edge of the end zone.

The Cyclones then answered with their clutch drive, which included a 33-yard completion from Purdy to Tarique Milton to set up Hall’s touchdown.

Iowa State plays at West Virginia next Saturday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m.
