(Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa - KIWA Staff Photo)Iowa City, Iowa (RI) — The Iowa Hawkeyes are up to 18th in the latest AP Poll after claiming the latest nail-biter in the Cy-Hawk Series.
Freshman kicker Caden Buhr connected on a 42-yard field goal with 15 seconds remaining as Iowa edged Iowa State 16-13 in Kinnick Stadium.
It was Buhr’s third field goal of the night, and he says he was hoping for a chance on the final drive.
Buhr redshirted last season and says he learned a lot from former Hawkeye kicker Drew Stevens.
Quarterback Hank Brown went the distance and finished with 191 passing yards, adding Iowa’s only touchdown on the ground.
It was a gritty performance by Brown and the offense, which rallied from a 10-0 first-half deficit and found a way despite the run game being bottled up by the Cyclone defense.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says they planned to play Jeremy Hecklinski as well but stuck with Brown as the game progressed.
Ferentz says it was a tough, hard-fought win — and the Hawkeyes will see plenty more like it in Big Ten play.
Iowa State managed just three second-half points as the Cyclones saw their two-game win streak in the series snapped.
That’s ISU coach Jimmy Rogers, who says the Cyclones made too many mistakes after halftime.
Next week, Iowa State returns to Jack Trice Stadium to face Bowling Green on Saturday, September 19th, with kickoff at 11 a.m.
