Nighthawks Down Lions In Season Opener

Hull, Iowa — The Class 3A #4 Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley Nighthawks beat the heat and 2A #1 Central Lyon/George-Little Rock 35-7 at AR Hesla Field in Hull Friday night.

The Nighthawks opened the game with a near six minute drive only to come away empty handed when they fumbled at the Lion four yard line. After a Central Lyon/George Little Rock 3-and-out, BHRV responded with a 2 play drive capped off by a Tanner Te Slaa 26 yard touchdown pass to Kaleb Kats making it 7-0 Nighthawks with 3:47 to go in the first quarter. After another Lion 3-and-out, BHRV used another 2 play drive to get on the board, this time Te Slaa found Landyn Van Kekerix on the 66 yard screen pass to make it 14-0 with 1:22 left in the first quarter.

Following a Nighthawk turnover, Central Lyon/George-Little Rock got some momentum, moved down the field and Zach Lutmer found Cooper Spiess in the back of the endzone with the 9 yard pass to pull within 7-14 with 7:53 left in the first half. With Central Lyon driving following another Nighthawk turnover, BHRV’s Cade Fisher jumped a Reece Vander Zee pass took the interception 65 yards to paydirt.

Heading into the half it was 21-7 Nighthawks.

After a defensive battle and both teams battling cramps, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley got back on the board late in the third with a 25 yard Van Kekerix run, pushing the score to 28-7. In the 4th, the Nighthawks capped the night with a heavy dose of Bryson Van Grootheest and he finished the drive with a 5 yard plunge. BHRV came away with the 35-7 win.

With the win, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley improves to 1-0 on the season and will visit Western Christian next week in Hull. Central Lyon/George-Little Rock falls to 0-1 and will host Sergeant Bluff-Luton.
