Hull, Iowa — The Class 2A #1 Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley Nighthawks fell to the Class 1A #9 West Lyon Wildcats 20-19 in overtime at A.R. Hesla Field in Hull on Friday night.
West Lyon got on the board quickly with their first possession of the game. Noah Van’t Hof would punch it in from 2 yards out for the quick 7-0 lead. Both defenses would tighten up and at the end of the first half the score would remain 7-0. West Lyon would put points on the board midway through the 3rd quarter from the leg of Jaden Snyder with a 42 yard field goal pushing the score to 10-0 Wildcats.
In the 4th quarter, Shane Solberg would give BHRV great field position off of a punt return and Solberg capped off the short field with a 24 yard TD run. Midway through the 4th it was 10-6 Wildcats. The next Nighthawks possession would stall, but Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley would recover a muffed punt to continue the drive. Kendrick Van Kekerix would then be on the receiving end of a 13 yard touchdown pass from Brett Moser. After the PAT it was 13-10 Nighthawks. West Lyon would get the ball back with 4:58 left in regulation, drive all the way to the Nighthawk 4 and settle for a game tying field goal from 22 yards out off the leg of Snyder once again to send the game into overtime.
West Lyon started the extra period with the ball and Mitchell Rentschler would find the end zone from 5 yards out for the quick score. With the extra point good, it was 20-13 West Lyon. The Nighthawks would respond on their possession. Facing a 4th and goal from the 4, Brett Moser hit Jacob Schafer on the screen for the score. Going for the two-point conversion and the win, Brett Moser would roll to his right, tuck it, extend for the pylon and end up a yard short. West Lyon would come away with the victory 20-19.
The Nighthawks fall to 1-1 on year and start district play next Friday at Estherville-Lincoln Central.
West Lyon improves to 2-0 on the year. The Wildcats will open their district schedule hosting Okoboji.
