Nighthawks on to State Football Quarterfinals

Rock Valley Iowa — Boyden Hull Rock Valley began the defense of their Class 2A Football Title with a 37-14 opening round win over Kuemper Catholic at Nick Hulst Field in Rock Valley Friday night. With the win the Nighthawks will host South Central Calhoun next Friday in the State Quarterfinals. The Titans downed Sioux Center 37-7 at Lake City. The game site for the quarterfinal will be Hesla Field in Hull.

The Nighthawks scored on their first possession as quarterback JT Van’t Hul went in from 12 yards out for the games first touchdown. The kick was no good and the Nighthawks were in front early 6-0 with 7:02 left in the first quarter.

Van’t Hul would score again with 11:04 left in the second quarter. This time on a 24 yard run. The kick by Beau De Jongh made the score 13-0.

The Nighthawks made it 21-0 as Van’t Hul found Cade Moser for a 36 yard touchdown pass. Boyden Hull Rock Valley went for two and were successful when Van’t Hul hit Isaac Munoz for the 2-point conversion. The touchdown came with 8:24 left in the half.

Elliot Van Kekerix found the end zone for a 14 yard touchdown run with 3:27 left in the half. De Jongh added the extra point and the Nighthawks would take a 28-0 lead into half time.

The Nighthawks had the ball first to start the second half and turned the possession into points as Elliot Van Kekerix scored on a 14 yard run for his second touchdown of the night. De Jongh added the point after and with 9:26 in the third quarter Boyden Hull Rock Valley had created a running clock situation.

Kuemper got on the board with :49 seconds left in the quarter to bring the running clock situation to a close. Miles Rupiper scored on a 1 yard run and Kyle Derner added the extra point to cut the lead to 35-7.

With 4:42 left in the fourth quarter a holding call in the end zone against the Knights gave the Nighthawks their first safety of the year and pushed the lead to 37-7.

Kuemper Catholic closed out the scoring with under a minute to play as Joey Pottebaum found Sam Auen for a 5 yard score. Derner’s extra point would make the final 37-14 Boyden Hull Rock Valley.

With the win the Nighthawks are 9-1 and on to the quarterfinals to host South Central Calhoun. Kuemper Catholic will close the year at 7-3.
