No. 5 Cyclones Dominate California Baptist, 39-3

WALNUT, Calif. – No. 5 Iowa State dispatched of California Baptist in its Big 12 opener, 39-3, Sunday afternoon at Mt. San Antonio College. The Cyclones took nine of 10 matches from the Lancers and won five bouts with bonus points.

David Carr and Will Feldkamp both recorded falls while Cody Chittum, Yonger Bastida and Anthony Echemendia all posted tech falls. MJ Gaitan and Ethan Perryman both returned to their home state of California and wrestled in front of a solid contingent of friends and family.

Iowa State (8-1, 1-0 Big 12) won the takedown battle against California Baptist (3-5, 0-2 Big 12), 30-5.

Chittum got to his offense often in a tech fall over Chaz Hallmark at 157 pounds. The Cyclone tallied six takedowns and two sets of four near fall points, including a cradle as time expired, in the victory.

Carr made quick work of Timothy Cowan in the 165-pound bout. He secured five takedowns in the first period before earning a fall in 2:01. Carr has won six consecutive matches and improved to 13-1 on the year with the victory.

At 174 pounds, Gaitan needed a takedown with 12 seconds remaining in the match to defeat Justin Phillips, 11-9. Feldkamp picked up Iowa State’s second fall of the day, and his fourth of the season, with a pin in 1:03 against Nathan Haas at 184 pounds.

Julien Broderson leading 4-2 late in the 197-pound match, iced his victory with a late takedown in the third period. The win sent Iowa State into the intermission with a 23-0 advantage.

Yonger Bastida put on a takedown clinic at heavyweight out of the break. He amassed seven first period takedowns to post a 21-6 tech fall in 2:24 against Max Acciardi. Bastida improved his season takedown ration to 60:1.

At 125 pounds, Kysen Terukina found himself in a battle with Elijah Griffin, tied 1-1 in the third period. Terukina was aggressive with his fakes and hand fighting, forcing the action to secure the winning takedown with a minute remaining.

Two California high school preps duked it out at 133 pounds in Iowa State’s Ethan Perryman and CBU’s Hunter Leake. Perryman trailed, 1-0, entering the final period and went underneath Leake to begin the final two minutes. The Lancer put on a tough ride and turned Perryman for two near fall points to win CBU’s first bout of the dual, 4-0.

Anthondy Echemendia won his sixth consecutive match via bonus points with a 20-3 tech fall over Emilio Trujillo in 3:42.

Zach Redding closed the dual with a gritty 6-3 victory over Dayne Morton at 149 pounds. Redding grabbed a first period takedown and fended off Morton in the final two minutes for the win.
