NWC’s Gilbert, Distance Medley Take First at Mount Marty

Yankton, South Dakota — James Gilbert Jr. and the distance medley both took first place at today’s Last Chance Invite, a meet hosted by Mount Marty University, in Yankton, S.D. This is the final tune-up prior to the GPAC Indoor Championships held next week in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Gilbert Jr. won an event for the sixth time during this indoor season, taking first in the long jump with a leap of 7.22m (23-08.25). He currently holds the top mark in the event in both the GPAC and NAIA. Gilbert Jr. also reached the finals in the 60m, finishing seventh with a time of 7.62.

The Raiders distance medley team turned in a great performance, coming back from behind to beat Dordt by less than a second as Dylan Hendricks edged Defender Jacob Vander Plaats at the finish line. The Raiders team posted a time of 10:21.5 and sits in seventh place in the NAIA; relay members include Hendricks, Nick Bernhagen, Joshua Van Dusseldorp and Wyatt Pryor.

Northwestern athletes recorded 29 top 10 finishes and 10 in the top five.

Dexter Wiese joined Gilbert Jr. with a top five finish in the long jump, placing fourth with a leap of 6.32m / 20-09. Aaron Shepard finished second in the high jump, clearing 6-01.

Isaac Munoz and Van Dusseldorp finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 600m. Two Raiders, Wyatt Pryor and Mitch Oostra, claimed fourth and fifth, in the 400m. Hendricks crossed the finish line in a close second in the 3K while Bernhagen finished fifth.
