The Okoboji Pioneers swept the Orabs in a basketball doubleheader Tuesday night in Sheldon. The girls game went to the 15th ranked Pioneers 54-43. Okoboji got the 55-48 upset of the 9th ranked Orabs in the boys game.
In the girls game Sheldon took a 13-10 first quarter lead. Okoboji would take a 31-22 lead at the half and never trail the rest of the way. Megan Peschong and Molly Mitchell hit for 11 points each. Sheldon got a game high 17 from Emily Johnson and 10 from Kelsey DenHartog.
With the win Okoboji improves to 12-2 for the year and 10-2 in the conference. Sheldon is 5-9 for the year and 4-8 in the Siouxland.
In the boys game Okoboji opened fast and played fast the rest of the contest as they led at all the breaks building a 13-5 first quarter lead and 25-16 halftime advantage. At the end of the third quarter the lead was 37-26 as the Pioneers went on to win 55-48. Sheldon would get within four points in the fourth quarter but every time Sheldon seemed ready to take control Okoboji would have an answer for a potential Sheldon run.
The Pioneers won the game at the free throw line. They came in shooting 74% as a team and did not make a bucket from the field in the final period. Instead they shot 18-of-22 from the line to earn the upset win 55-48. Four players went to the line for Okoboji in the fourth quarter.
Alex Heller had a team high 17 points with Tyler Stumbo hitting for 15. Sheldon got a game high 22 points from Dylan Ennema. His final four field goals of the contest all came from 3-point range. Collin Wolthizen joined Ennema in double figures with 10 points.
The loss ends a six game Orab winning streak and puts the season record at 10-3 with an 8-3 conference mark. With the win Okoboji goes to 5-8 for the year and 4-7 in the Siouxland.
Up next for Sheldon will be a Friday trip to Rock Valley. On Thursday Okoboji travels to Emmetsburg for a non-conference doubleheader.
